Important Information for
8th Grade Students & Parents
Open Enrollment Feb 1st - 19th, 2010
- Students who live within the SCCS boundaries who wish to attend a school other than their “home” school must apply through a process called Open Enrollment.
- Open Enrollment occurs once a year in February and students who are approved attend their new school at the beginning of the next school year (late August).
- The Open Enrollment Application is available here on-line as well as at each SCCS middle and high school school and the District Office (located on the Soquel HS. campus) starting the first day of Open Enrollment.
- Applications submitted by the deadline are typically approved; approval of those submitted after is based on available space.
- Questions about Open Enrollment should be directed to Eileen Brown in the Office of Student Services at 429-3410 x215.
8th Grade Parent Night Tues, Feb 16th, 2010
If you missed our 8th Grade Parent Night, you can still check out materials from the evening -
- 5:30 - 6pm Seating and Entertainment - MPR
- 6:00 - 6:30pm General Presentation - MPR
- 6:30 - 8:30 pm Break Out Groups / Department Presentations
- Groups specifically for Spanish speaking families will be escorted by bilingual guides who will translate presentations.
Parents of incoming freshmen are invited to Harbor High for an informative evening about all our school has to offer. After a general opening, parents are broken up into small groups and escorted by students and staff to a series of other locations on campus to listen to 10 minute presentations about . . .

Harbor Rocks! Thurs, March 11, 2010
8th graders come to Harbor for a jam-packed morning of activities and information starting with a rally-type opening which give students an overview of the extra-curriculum program here at Harbor. Students are then given a tour of the campus in small groups lead by a student leader and meet with a counselor who gives them an overview of course offerings.
Incoming freshmen interested in participating who are not currently enrolled in Shoreline or Branciforte Middle School may sign-up to attend by contacting Melissa Webber at 429-3810 x1048.
Harbor Rocks Packets March
All 8th grade students from Shoreline and Branciforte receive a folder to take home to parents with informational materials and paperwork regarding their course selection for the following year. In it you will find tips for scheduling, an Athletic Interest Survey (for students interested in going out for sports), our Student/Parent Handbook and other information important for you and your student as they enter Harbor. Middle School Visitations March 17th & 18th, 2010 (Shoreline) March 25th, 2010 (Branciforte Middle School)
Harbor counselors visit Shoreline and Branciforte Middle Schools and meet one-on-one with each 8th grade student to review his/her completed course selection sheet. At this time, counselors also review transcripts and test scores of the student and discuss specialized classes based on student need and interest. Students planning on attending Harbor who go to other middle schools should contact Melissa Webber at 429-3810 x 1048 to find out when you will be meeting with your counselor.
Branciforte / Harbor High College Awareness Night
for 6th - 8th Grade Parents in English & Spanish

This presentation held at Branciforte Middle School is designed to raise awareness that the college path is available to everyone, strategies for getting there and how parent involvement can play a major impact on students’ success.
- Branciforte and Harbor counselors will discuss what parents can do at every grade level from 6th - 12th grade to support their student in being prepared for college.
- A representative from Cabrillo College will explain the numerous paths they have to offer with emphasis on transferagreement programs that upon completion, guarantee automatic acceptance into a specific UC or CSU.
- And a UCSC representative will also speak to the numerous forms of financial support that are available to pay for college.
Middle School LRT's (Language Review Teams) May
- Our ELD Counselor participates in the Language Review Team and meets with the ELD teachers at the middle schools to learn about the needs of the incoming English Learners and to provide guidance on placement.
504 Plans
- Parents of freshmen are encouraged to contact their student's counselor regarding learning disabilities, 504 or behavior plans that were put in place previously, or any other information they feel the school should be aware to support their student's success at Harbor High.
Summer Mailer Late July
Important information regarding the start of the school year and other activities including an AB calendar will be mailed to all registered Harbor High parents and students.
Passport Day August 2010
Passport Day occurs the Wednesday before school begins. On this day, students pick-up their schedule so that they can have an opportunity to meet with their counselor before classes begin if changes need to be made. Students and parents should refer to the Calendar page of our website for designated days and hours the Counseling Office will be open for students to drop in.
Freshmen Orientation
Mon, August 30th, 2010 7:45 am - noon (HHS gym)
The Monday before the first day of school, all incoming freshmen are invited to attend this fun-filled and information packed morning. Students meet in the gym for a general opening and then are broken up into small groups lead by Link Leaders, student role models who have been trained to be mentors and ambassadors to Harbor High. In these groups, students are given a campus tour tied to a theme and engage in small group activities that help them get to know each other and their new school. Students are reminded to bring their schedule so that their Link Leaders can show them where their classrooms are during the tour.
