How Does the AB Block Schedule Work?

  • Students are typically enrolled in 6 classes.
  • Students  attend  three classes - periods A2, A3 and A4 - on one day  (called an A-day).
  • Students attend Bs, B3 and B4 the next (called a B-day).
  • The first day of each semester starts as an A-day, then the next is B-day with the rotation continuing until “finals week” at the end of the semester which has a different schedule.
  • In cases of holidays and breaks, when determining if the day back is an A or B day, refer to the last school day.  If the last school day is an A-day, then the day back is a B-day and vice versa.
  • The beginning of 2nd semester always begins with an A-day.

What is SGI (Student Guided Instruction)?

  • SGI  is an opportunity for students to meet with teachers to receive extra assistance on assignments, review grades, inquire about make-up work, take quizzes missed due to excused absences and take care of other school business.
  • Many teachers offer drop-in tutoring during this time or take appointments to meet individually with students.
  • Students may also purchase snacks and breakfast, pay bills in the Finance Office and take care of other school business.
  • The Counseling Office is open and students may meet with their counselor (no appointment is necessary).
  • Students may also make use of the Library, Computer Lab or Career Center.
  • Please be advised that students are NOT to leave campus during SGI and any parents coming on campus must first report to the Main Office to receive a guest pass.

Who is Enrolled in the 00 Period?

Courses offered during the 00 period meet every day for 50 minutes from 7:30 - 8:20 am.

  • Only students who request a 00 are enrolled in a class this period, however, offerings are limited and  space is not guaranteed.  Students are strongly discouraged from taking a class at this time if they do not perform well in the morning.
  • Due to increased tardies and absences solely during the morning 00 daily period (7:30 – 8:20 am), students who have 5 or more tardies or absences a semester during the 00 will be rescheduled into afternoon classes and will be locked out of taking a 00 period again.
  • Priority for enrollment into a 00 period is given in the following order:
  1. Students who need 7 classes because they are deficient in credits or need to take a support class.
  2. Students who wish to take 7 classes at Harbor with multiple electives like Jazz Band, Leadership, AVID, Play Productions, etc.
  3. Students who wish to take a class at another Santa Cruz City School site that requires them to have an open period to travel.
  4. All other students are enrolled based on the space available.   Students should keep in mind that even with a 00, an early release is not guaranteed and students may have a gap in their schedule.
